Readings and assignment

When our class resumes on 4 January 2012, I will give two lectures on Jean Bodin and Thomas Hobbes. The rest of the semester will be devoted to the theories of Adam Smith, Karl Marx, and John Maynard Keynes in terms of their relevance to the current international economic crisis.

Read whatever secondary materials you can find on these three political-economic thinkers. It is unrealistic to prescribe their masterworks, but I require you to read The Communist Manifesto by Marx and Friedrich Engels. This is short, easy to read, and available in our library, in National Book Store and Fully Booked. You can also download it in the Internet.

Assignment: What do you consider to be the most startling and contentious ideas in The Communist Manifesto? Explain why. Deadline: Wednesday, 11 January 2012. Print your essay on A4 size paper, not handwritten on a bluebook.
